History of Father's Day

Sonora Smart Dodd pioneered the idea of celebrating Father's Day. She came out with the idea while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909 and the first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. At about the same time in various towns and cities across America, other people also started to celebrate Father's Day. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of every June as Father's Day, and Father's Day was made an annual celebration from 1972.
